My grandmother’s favorite story was the one about the special package from the rich uncle overseas. The brand new Singer sewing machine she got that was the pride of the neighborhood. This sewing machine was always my favorite place in her house and still brings back memories of her working on it and then teaching me how to use it. The threads of this embroidery are like the different threads of her life. The eyes that saw wars of great loss, that saw a country being born, that raised children and grandchildren and the wrinkles that tell those stories. This story and this craft is the story of my grandmother and the story of women around the world. The movement and rhythm of my hands embroidering resinate with the movements of the women of my family and with that of centuries of women from around the world. It’s the story of her life, the story of mine, and the story of women.
